Pure Busselton Water

Tips for conserving water

There are many ways to save water, both inside and outside the home.

Here are a few suggestions to help you conserve our precious resource.

Inside the Home

  • Use a timer in the shower
  • Turn off running taps while brushing your teeth
  • Use the water saver cycle on washing machines and dishwashers where possible, install aerators in your sink taps that reduce the flow but retain water pressure
  • Use water wise shower heads
  • Fix dripping taps and remember to check for possible water leaks once a year or if you have an unusual increase in your consumption levels.  You can do this by turning off all your water and checking the meter to see if it is running.  If so, you may have a leak and should contact a plumber.

Outside the Home

  • Deep soak your lawn. Watering your lawn every night makes the grass shallow-rooted. Water for longer periods, less often, to soak deep into the soil
  • Aerate the soil or use a soil wetting agent to allow water to be absorbed more easily.
  • Mulch your gardens.  Mulch prevents water being lost through evaporation and makes sure the water you put on your plants, gets down to the root systems where it is needed.
  • Water your plants at the base, near the roots and if possible, install underground or a drip reticulation system
  • Dunk your pot plants in a bucket of water until the bubbles stop
  • Plant drought tolerant plants and grass and remove weeds, they compete for water and nutrients.
  • Water during the cooler parts of the day or at night and have a timer installed on automatic reticulation and sprinkler systems.
  • Ensure water bowls for pets are sturdy and not easily tipped over
  • Install a rainwater tank, after checking with the local Council and make sure it is well maintained.
